Five Essential Add-Ons for Legion (and a Few Extra!)

This started as an article about things that players of World of Warcraft: Legion can do at level 110 but that’s a horse that’s been pretty well beaten to death recently on other sites and over the course of WoW’s history itself (hint: raids, dungeons, achievements, pet battles, artifact power questing, raising alts….you know the drill).

But how to work efficiently with your game and your doubtless many alts? Now that World of Warcraft: Legion has been out a few weeks and players are once again in the ‘groove’ of the game, it’s time to talk about how to best manage your time in game to maximize your fun and to feel as if you’ve accomplished something for the day. To that end, there are several game add-ons that are easily installed and that will greatly help players of any type no matter what type of activity they’re engaged in. There are literally thousands of WoW add-ons. But we’ve selected a curated list of some of the very, very best.

First Things First

You can, of course, install add-ons by hand but why when there are tools out there to do it for you. Both the Curse client and WoWMatrix will allow you to search for, install, update and / or delete add-ons with a single mouse click. Be sure to install one.

That out of the way, here is our list of the best of the best when it comes to WoW add-ons!

NPC Scan

NPCScan helps you find NPCs by scanning nameplates, minimap vignettes, and mouseover targets, with an optional dynamic targeting keybinding. Once an NPC is found by one of these methods, an on screen alert is displayed and an audio alert is played.

Deadly Boss Mods or Big / Little Wigs

DBM, aka Deadly Boss Mods, and BigWigs both perform roughly the same tasks for one another. DBM is arguably the more popular, but fans of BigWigs say that it’s less of a resource hog.

Generally speaking, both DBM and BQ are boss encounter add-ons. Each contains a host of scripts that are specific to instances throughout WoW. During a boss battle, the add-ons will trigger an alert for the player with text, timer bars, sound or all of the above. They help players time movement out of the way of a big boss ability, to get out of the goo so to speak or to understand when one phase of a fight ends and another begins.

In Legion with big alterations to stationary casting and reduced movement speed across the board, these are add-ons we can’t recommend enough. Both perform their jobs quite well and it’s really up to the player to decide between the two.

Auctionator

Auctionator, especially in the early days of the Legion expansion, is a useful Auction House add-on for the more casual market player. In order to make a good profit from the Auction House, a tool like Auctionator can make all the difference in the world with its ease of use.

The AH interface is greatly simplified for buying, selling, tracking auctions, posting multiple auctions at once and so forth. is designed for casual everyday auction house users.

TomTom

TomTom is, just as the GPS equipment of the same name, a navigation system to guide players to locations throughout Azeroth. Players can set coordinates to help them find specific locations and with the CrazyArrow add-on, can have a visual representation of the general direction in which the destination lies. It’s a simple to use, complex to master add-on that will take away some of the frustration in finding that pesky underwater cave.

MUST HAVE ADD-ON: World Quests List

World Quests List is without a single doubt the MOST essential add-on for Legion. At level 110, world quests unlock and the list of available quest changes many times throughout the day with different objectives, locations and rewards. World Quests List adds itself to the region or zone map and lists all available quests, what the Emissary faction is for the day,  what the rewards are, where the quest takes place, what faction is represented and how long the quest will be available. There’s not a better one out there. It is a must have for Legion.

A Few Honorable Mentions

ElvUI (with Weak Auras)

ElvUI is an interface replacement package that allows players to customize the World of Warcraft interface by making it modular. Elements of the UI can be moved, resized or even not shown. Even small details such as the size and font style of Trade Chat (and all other text on the UI) can be selected to best suit a player’s needs. ElvUI can also be customized for each individual character and comes with a suit of other add-ons for healers or tanks or DPS, for instance.

Though a bit tricky to set up at first, once that first beautiful UI is created, it can be saved as a template and shared among all other characters on account.

Postal

Postal is a mailbox utility that allows players to mass open mail to collect attachments, carbon copy mail to other characters, etc. and is 100000000% better than the default.

Rarity

From the Rarity author’s description: “Rarity tracks how many times you've tried to obtain various rare items like mounts, battle pets, and toys. It will tell you how likely you are to obtain the item, track how long you've been farming for it, and tell you how lucky you've been so far. Although it's mostly used for mounts, battle pets, and toys, it supports pretty much any item, including profession patterns, archaeology projects, and more.”

Handy Notes

Handy Notes is a small add-on that can be toggled on or off at will to help players find treasure boxes, rare spawn locations or other tricky game content.

Can I Mog It?

Can I Mog It lets players know if they have “collected” and / or “learned” equipment when it is picked up. In a simple chat line, players will be informed if a piece of gear picked up is new to the collection. It also assists players knowing whether or not a piece of “bind on equip” gear has been learned or not.
