News & the Lack Thereof

Hail and well met, fellow Crusaders! Terry from MMORPG here, and I’m back to talk Eternal Crusade with you again. To be honest, there’s not a whole lot going on right now, other than the studio is still working on the game, particularly the first Early Access Module, but we’ll find some things to discuss anyway, good, bad and ugly, in no particular order.

Let’s start with ugly. Miguel has been gone for a few weeks now, and in his absence there has been little to no Eternal Crusade news or coverage. This is one of the things that I feared, to be honest. Having Miguel attached to this project meant that there was an (almost) inexhaustible supply of enthusiasm and energy being poured into the development all the time. Since Miguel isn’t a programmer, he spent quite a bit of time creating interest in the community, and getting information out to a ravenous public on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. And this time didn’t cost the game anything in terms of development time, production just kept plugging away while Miguel did his thing. Now we don’t have that, and I am feeling a little neglected. I know, I know, I’m just spoiled from the level of communication that we had under Miguel, and that wasn’t the norm in the gaming industry anyway. That’s right, I am spoiled, and I liked being spoiled. It was new and unique, and it made me feel like I was being given a peek behind the curtain, so to speak. And I want it back! Hopefully, given another couple of weeks, Behaviour will get their act together, and open the communication gates again.

As for the bad, this is sort of related to the loss of Miguel, but it shouldn’t be, and that is: we are still waiting for answers on particular and pressing questions that we were told we would know by now. You know the questions: what game engine is going to be used? We are halfway through the first quarter of 2015, how close to seeing the first Early Access module are we? Are we going to see a slow-down in the presentation of Twitch streams? Are we any closer to getting a publisher? When are we going to see the development roadmap that Miguel promised us? Or are promises made by Miguel no longer applicable, as he is no longer associated with the project? How about Rogue Trader Store items? Again, I know I sound somewhat entitled when I ask these questions, but I wasn’t born this way! My attitude is the result of the former, more information-friendly environment, and I’ve grown used to that.

For the good, we have really the only new thing on the Eternal Crusade front so far this year, the addition of Nathan Richardsson as Senior Producer. He is smart, thick-skinned (hugely important in this community), very funny, in an odd sort of way, and he has a very genuine love for all things 40K. This last is an attribute that we, the Eternal Crusade community, should be very pleased to know. I have seen games produced by dev teams that are just “making a living”, and they are almost universally lackluster compared to those made by teams that love the IP they are working with. Nathan may not have the puppy-dog enthusiasm and energy that Miguel has, but he is articulate and well-versed in 40K lore, and has already established that he intends to remain as true to the 40K lore as possible.

So there you have it, we are seemingly going through a bit of a lull as far as getting new information goes. My hope that this is the calm before the storm, the storm being the release of the first Early Access Module. As always, if you want to follow the development of this truly ambitious project more closely, and get your opinions out there for people to see, just head over to the official forums and register. There really is nothing like seeing dev discussions of game systems, and how they will fit into the finished product,; and who knows, maybe your idea will get some people thinking, and be incorporated into the final release. I confess that I was very concerned when Miguel announced that he was leaving Behaviour, but, contrary to my negative expectations, the sky has NOT fallen on Arkhona. In fact, the general vibe I am getting from the dev team is one of great optimism. They have every intention of carrying on as planned all along, creating the definitive Warhammer 40K game for the PC market, and that’s good news for all of us.
