2020’s Doom Eternal is getting a sequel and its probably not what you’re expecting. Revealed at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase, id Software showed off medieval prequel to Doom Eternal titled Doom: The Dark Ages.
Doom Guy’s got himself a cape and a very medieval spin on the iconic Doom chainsaw. What happens if you combine a chainsaw and a shield? Well, you get the Saw Shield. It’s equal parts ridiculous and instantly iconic. It can even be thrown and shield bounce between enemies like you’re some kind of demon slaying Captain America.
Doom is also taking its first foray into vehicular combat with a magnificent looking steed for Doom Guy to ride upon: the fierce Mecha Dragon.
As awesome as the reveal was, id Software didn’t get to preserve the full surprise for the Showcase. The details were mostly leaked a few weeks before the announcement.
An interview with Doom: The Dark Ages’ creative director Hugo Martin details some of the changes coming to combat.
No specific release date has been set, but we do know the game will release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S sometime in 2025.
Players interested in keeping up with Doom: The Dark Ages can wishlist the game now on Steam.
