With the closed alpha for Marvel Rivals fast approaching, NetEase has released a new trailer showing off Yggsgard, one of the game’s maps. The video gives us a flythrough of the map, showing the various halls and areas players will do battle in.
As one might expect from its odd name, Yggsgard is a mashup of Asgard and Yggdrasill. Following the “Timestream Entanglement” Asgard fused with Yggdrasill, otherwise known as the World Tree. In Marvel lore, Yggdrasill is an energy field that connects all the Ten Realms of Asgardian cosmology. Loki, the God of Mischief, in true Loki fashion, has taken advantage of the situation and has built his kingdom in Yggsgard.
Loki is himself playable and is among one of many Marvel characters both iconic and obscure that will be playable in Marvel Rivals. So far, those characters include Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Groot, Hulk, Iron Man, Luna Snow, Magik, Magneto, Mantis, Namor, Peni Parker, Rocket Raccoon, Scarlet Witch, Spider-Man, Storm, Star-Lord, and the Punisher.
The trailer may offer more than a simple flythrough of one of the game’s maps. Some observant players pointed out the brief appearance of Hela in the trailer. Will Hela be a surprise playable character? We’ll have to see in May once the closed alpha gets underway.
