If Indie MMORPG’s interest you, then perhaps it’s time to add another one to the list of games to watch. Monsters & Memories is an in development classic fantasy MMORPG created by Niche Worlds Cult. The game is currently in the “proof of concept” stage, which means the 10-person team is currently building their core systems to ensure they are viable.
Monsters & Memories has been in development since 2020, and the team has detailed their progress on their official YouTube channel, as well as their comprehensive Roadmap that specifically details their proof-of-concept features.
Like many indie MMO’s in the making, the team wants to revive the subscription only model, which means that, in the event the game gets to a release state, there will be no microtransactions within the game. Instead, the team wants to enable tangible goods outside of the game, such as clothing, trinkets and other goods that will allow players to show their support for the game. All important in-game items should be earned, according to their development philosophy.
Niche Worlds Cult also understand that their build philosophy isn’t for everyone. The game is planned to be a class-based system where grouping is recommended, though it may not always be required. The world will be broken into zones, but they will not have instanced areas, and wish to keep the world as open as possible. There will also be 13 races and 18 classes, which will give players plenty of choices in how they want to create their character.
One important factor that often happens when building an indie game, is that the team will ask for funding. Monsters & Memories doesn’t have a donation page, nor are they currently selling early access. Instead, the team has asked potential players to simply provide feedback during their streams.
“For now, the best help is for you to continue to provide feedback during the streams, engage in the community there and on Discord, and let as many people as possible know about the project, this website, and the streams.”

This does lead to questions related to how M&M is currently funding their development. We’ve reached out to the team via their Discord for more information, and we will update the article if we hear back.
