Cyberpunk 2077 is getting multiplayer. Sort of. Dedicated modders have been hard at work at a mod called CyberMP and while the mod is still in pre-alpha, it’s looking pretty impressive.
A nine minute video released by YouTuber JuiceHead offers a fascinating rundown of how the mod works, some of its caveats, and the issues he experienced while playing it.
The most important thing to understand about CyberMP is that it’s not meant to be a co-op mod. Players can’t undertake quests together. Instead, it’s best to think of the mod like Grand Theft Auto Online as more of a sandbox for players to play in. In the mod, players can do PvP, race cars (though there is some desync currently), and more. NPCs are nowhere to be seen – but they can be heard and JuiceHead described this as a bit terrifying. No release date is available for the mod just yet.
CD Project Red had official plans for Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer at one point, but the mode was canceled following the game’s rocky launch and clear need for significant focus on post-launch support to get it where it needed to be. Thankfully, following update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion, Cyberpunk 2077 is a better game than ever.
