Player Unknown Battlegrounds changed the world of gaming when it hit Steam in March of 2017. It has been one of the highest played, streamed and viewed games of 2017. The only thing which was more hype than the initial launch was at E3 2017 when it was announced that in Q4 2017 the game would expand its platform from PC only to console. Specifically it will be an XBOX exclusive.
In July 2017 another game came out of the shadows and took the gaming community by storm. Fortnite took the over the shoulder shooting game mode, added a tower defense system and a zombie survival game with a futuristic story line. The battle to prevent human extinction from the invading Husks from the powerful alien storm which has ravaged and destroyed cities, towns and put the world on its heels. This amazing PVE game has combined many different play styles of other games into one nice neat package.
September 2017 gives us a controversial marriage of these two games. Fortnite announced and set into beta, Fortnite Battle Royale, a new game mode which feels and looks much like the popular game PUBG (Player Unknown Battlegrounds) with a Fortnite twist. The game mode was a huge hit and even more of a hit when announce it will be a completely FREE to play mode for PS4, XBOX, PC and Mac with its release on Sept. 26 2017. This creation has driven a LOT of battles on social media and we still don't know who will be the last man standing in this battle over game popularity but one thing is for sure, the Battle Royale system started by Player Unknown is here to stay.
In Fortnite Battle Royale you and 99 other people drop onto a map full of ammo, bandages, medpacks, Shield potions, an arsenal of guns, traps and more steel, brick and wood than the strongest man in the world could carry. Soon after you bail out of the Battle Bus and glide to the surface you are immediately rushing to collect anything and everything you can to survive to the last living player. (I'm sorry there are no chicken dinners here). In Fortnite Battle Royale, you don't just have to worry about getting shot, or die to the constantly shrinking battle area but also forts built by players or strategically placed electric or spike traps. Yes, as a player you can collect resources and build a fort to protect yourself from your enemies complete with traps. This allows a variety of play styles from those who run in like the armies of Middle Earth to save a hairy footed hobbit to a builder who can craft a labyrinth of walls and traps to surprise their enemies with violent nasty pointy spikes and electro death from above.
This game mode takes the awesome style of the Battle Royale system mixed with the amazing PVE tower defense system of the survival mode into 1 deadly, addictive and extremely fun game for all systems. We still have no idea where the IRL battle between Player Unknown and Epic Games will take us, but until they determine who the last game standing will be, players will flood into and try to stand tall as the King of the Hill and get the illustrious win and prove they are the best Survivor!
