Perfect World Entertainment announced earlier today that the upcoming anticipated entry in the Torchlight franchise, Torchlight Frontiers, will be launched as the next numbered entry into the series, Torchlight III. The Torchlight Frontiers team is hard at work on the next major update to the game. Called "Beast Buddies", the patch will include pet companions. While they've always had helpful abilities to share with their player companion, pets in Torchlight Frontiers will be upping their game. Players will be able to collect a number of pets and swap them out as well as collect pet skills to assign to their companion.
The most recent patch to the Torchlight Frontiers Alpha fixes what could likely be the biggest problem I’ve had with the Action RPG MMO – character progression. While it’s still a work in progress (it is Alpha), the new and more traditional skill trees and levels prove that Torchlight Frontiers doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel to make an impact.
When the next update is deployed into Torchlight Frontiers, it will come with a new skill progression system and a ton of leveling changes. Update 6: Adept's Path is currently scheduled to drop on May 21st.
If you're one of those folks who like to keep tabs on the ins and outs of game development, then the news that the Torchlight Frontiers "living roadmap" may be of interest. A new blog on the TF site introduces fans to the concept of a living roadmap and how it provides a dynamic picture of what is currently in the development pipeline. Torchlight Frontiers will be getting a beefy update tomorrow that will see the Railmaster added to the playable characters roster. To make space for him, the number of available characters has been increased from three to five. In addition, a number of fixes will be part of the patch. This includes a fix to overspawns, 2-handed focus tuning, text localization and various, smaller tweaks. Lastly, three new types of monsters will be added from the Putrid family: Warrior, Archer and Slayer.
Torchlight has been a fan favorite around here for years. It was an RPG launched in 2009 and quickly became a success on PC. The scope of the world seemed endless, especially for steampunk fantasy fans. As the years moved forward, we were treated to Torchlight II which was an excellent follow up to the original RPG. It offered more classes and options and a more in-depth storyline. Now, almost ten years later we are looking at the launch of the original goal which was a Torchlight MMO.
The Torchlight Frontiers team has revealed a new class coming to the game, this time, the Railmaster aka "The Conductor of Pain". The Railmaster has a canine companion carries a number of packs about its person while the Railmaster himself is literally followed by a train!
Last week, Torchlight Frontiers devs introduced "Contracts", the game's version of seasonal content. Each Contract brings with it the opportunity to complete objectives, earn Fame and unlock "valuable rewards each time a Fame level-up is reached". Each Contract season will offer unique rewards, new missions and a reset Fame bar.
When the Torchlight Frontiers team goes live for a streaming event later today, they will be showcasing the latest additions and improvements to the ongoing beta test. Of particular note, viewers will learn more about a new system to be added to the game called "Contracts" that is "a new seasonal event system offering exclusive rewards by completing the Empire's thematic quests".
I’ve seen two schools of thought with Torchlight Frontiers so far: one that loves the core of the game, even with its rough edges - and one that thinks it’s lacking the fun of the original two. Me? I’m somewhere in between. On one hand, I love what Torchlight Frontiers is aiming to become, and on the other I know this is Alpha and that the game is missing a lot of content and features are in flux.
