  • Torchlight Frontiers: The Adept's Path is the Right One

The most recent patch to the Torchlight Frontiers Alpha fixes what could likely be the biggest problem I’ve had with the Action RPG MMO – character progression. While it’s still a work in progress (it is Alpha), the new and more traditional skill trees and levels prove that Torchlight Frontiers doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel to make an impact.

  • Torchlight Frontiers – An MMO We Always Wanted

Torchlight has been a fan favorite around here for years. It was an RPG launched in 2009 and quickly became a success on PC. The scope of the world seemed endless, especially for steampunk fantasy fans. As the years moved forward, we were treated to Torchlight II which was an excellent follow up to the original RPG. It offered more classes and options and a more in-depth storyline. Now, almost ten years later we are looking at the launch of the original goal which was a Torchlight MMO.

  • The Almost MMO and Me

I’ve noticed something of late - I haven’t logged into a real MMORPG, even my precious Elder Scrolls Online, in weeks. In ESO’s case, this is partly because I’m waiting for Elsweyr. But usually, between big content swells of ESO, I’m at least playing something else - GW2, WoW, FFXIV, Neverwinter, and so forth. But there’s a type of game that seems to be meeting my needs for persistence and online play. I’ve been trying to think of a name for them for ages, and I think Almost MMO just about covers it.

  • Is Torchlight Frontiers MMO Enough?

There was a time when I would look down on an Online Dungeon Crawler like Torchlight Frontiers. My taste in MMORPG’s was very specific. I knew what I wanted and if it didn’t fit my specs I wouldn’t give it a look. What a narrow view that was. It cost me many decent MMORPG experiences and people that I would have shared them with.

  • Torchlight Frontiers: What I Think So Far

I’ve seen two schools of thought with Torchlight Frontiers so far: one that loves the core of the game, even with its rough edges - and one that thinks it’s lacking the fun of the original two. Me? I’m somewhere in between. On one hand, I love what Torchlight Frontiers is aiming to become, and on the other I know this is Alpha and that the game is missing a lot of content and features are in flux.

  • Torchlight Frontiers - Forging Forward with the Community as a Guide

Torchlight Frontiers is inching ever closer to its eventual launch in 2019, and with two exciting alpha weekends under its belt, and more to come, we caught up with Tyler Thompson, Project Lead and Echtra Co-Founder and Paul Hobbs, Community Manage at Echtra. Together, we discussed everything from how the team’s been trying to push the genre farther, and how they’ve learned to rein it in when they go too far.

  • MMORPG.com’s Best of 2018 Awards

The new year is upon us, and that can only mean one thing. Time for us to look back at the year that was while bracing for the year ahead and recount the best (and worst) games we played during the last twelve months. The entire writing staff of MMORPG.com was polled for this year’s awards, and each game that won had a majority vote in its favor.

  • The List: The Most Anticipated MMOs of 2019

Another year, another list of the games we hope don’t suck in 2019. MMOs have been waiting what seems forever to get something new, and this year there is no shortage of upcoming games to look forward to. The question is - will any of them actually release in 2019, or will it be another year of waiting for the next big thing?

  • Torchlight Frontiers & the Awesome Power of Relic Weapons

Relic Weapons are as integral in defining who your character is as your pet and the gear that you’re wearing. In essence, pet, character class and relic weapon become your identity, but one that can shift from Frontier to Frontier or just because you want to play a different way.

  • Hands On with Torchlight Frontiers - Gamescom 2018

Over at Gamescom 2018, I met up with Echtra’s Max Schafer, leader of the team on Frontiers and veteran of the Torchlight and Diablo franchise. While I got to try out the steampunk-inspired golem for myself, I also had to interview Schaefer on the project. You can read some of the highlights in our previous report, but he also had a cavern full of insight to share about developing the class, the content, and the combat for this completely new experience.

  • Max Schaefer On Housing, Pets, Progression and More

During Gamescom 2018, our pals Ed and Gareth were able to be among the first to get hands-on time with Echtra and Perfect World’s Torchlight Frontiers - the brand new MMO ARPG based on the Torchlight franchise formerly of Runic Games. They also spoke to studio founder Max Schaefer about many of the finer details of how Frontiers will play - from housing to randomization, progression and gear, day and night cycles and more.

  • How Echtra Plans to Make Their Dream MMO ARPG

What seems forever ago, we talked with Max Schaefer and Runic Games upon the announcement of Torchlight 1, and how the IP’s ultimate goal was to evolve into an MMO. That had always been the goal with the ill-fated Flagship side-project Mythos, but we all know that Flagship never could get Mythos where it wanted to go. Runic wanted to make Hob, and Max still wanted to make that ARPG MMO he’d been dreaming of for years. Enter, Echtra Games.
