The Other Side of Oregon

As I mentioned last week, I've been down in the San Diego offices this week. I might as well call this "the other side of the US", as I've gone from 2 hours to the Canadian border to 30 minutes away from the Mexican border.

I came down early to start getting things ready for the block party this weekend and sneak into the San Diego Comic Con for a bit, as well. Overall, it's been another long week.

Forums Transition

I suppose having the forums transition be interrupted by a blackout in Southern California might have been taken as a sign. Throw in the ripple effect on air traffic, and I also ended up with a four hour delay getting off the ground Wednesday. Good thing there wasn't anything going on I needed to pay attention to, right? :P

No, the forums transition has not gone smoothly. Yes, there have been some serious bugs and security issues. Yes, we and some of the other communities get to be the "guinea pigs" for the rest of the communities. And our experiences are going to help them not to go through the same issues.

Does that suck for us? Yes. But someone had to be first and it was better to go through this with the amount of data we have versus the amount that EQII or SWG have. There are certainly things we could have done to keep some of our current problems from happening and we're making sure those lessons are learned internally.

However, it is one reason I am glad I'm here in San Diego for the transition. The platform group has been working long hours to fix bugs and test new builds to get them out to the communities. They're just like any other game-programming team in crunch-mode right now. While things are rough for us now, that experience is going to benefit us in the long run.

Is this a "rah-rah" speech for the forums team? Sure. Beating them down isn't going to help anything, but making sure they have what they need to get our community running smoothly again will. They're learning hard lessons and all the CRMs dealing with the new forums right now are making sure the devs understand what needs to happen.
