Those of you who have read the SWG newsletter already know that I’m not ready to make any announcements regarding when Beta 3 starts. I will let you in on what’s going on behind the scenes. The game is progressing nicely on our internal QA servers; I believe they are testing just about every feature/system that is set for initial release. The Beta 2 people on the other hand are just starting to come out of a dark time we like to call load testing. During most of December, we subjected the poor testers to load test after load test as we attempted to nail down all the issues that relate to having large number of people on the galaxy at the same time. This process isn’t done, but we have started getting back to focus testing of specific systems. They still have not had the opportunity to play the game with all the lights on, so to speak.
It is our philosophy that public beta needs to have a stable and virtually complete gaming experience. We’ve seen too many products lose out on potential customers who didn’t quite understand the process of beta testing, tried the game in beta and decided not to buy the game based on an incomplete experience. Whether we like it or not, many people treat Beta 3 more as an opportunity to try before they buy as opposed to a chance to help make it a better product for release.

Beta 3 will still be very important for us to catch bugs and balance the game at scale (though in Beta 2 we can essentially test the scale of a complete galaxy). But we also must not make the mistake of opening the doors and exposing people to expected problems such as frequent server downtimes. Does that mean I’m saying the current version has too many problems at this stage? No, we think it has pretty much the appropriate number of issues for a game 3 months before ship. However, it certainly doesn’t help the marketing effort to let the average person experience the problems first hand.

This also doesn’t mean we are trying to hide any problems from you. Case in point, I’m telling you about them in the weekly Beta Updates. However, the NDA is still important to us. Despite a few breaches (that are being looked at by our legal department – ‘nuff said), we’re very pleased with how professionally our beta testers are handling themselves.

Speaking of the Beta Testers, as I said we’re starting them back on focus testing. They’ve been working hard at our mission systems. In an upcoming test, we are finally letting them off of Tatooine and giving them a chance to explore Naboo.

To finish off, here is a peak at ten of the dozens of notes from our recent patch message:

[li]Improved color/lighting on Tatooine
[li]Added animation for several pet tricks
[li]Disconnected time before logout set to 3 minutes unless in a hotel, house or campsite
[li]Fixed creatures camping incap'd players
[li]Improved camera collision (shouldn't go through walls as much anymore)
[li]You can no longer sit, go prone or kneel when you are swimming
[li]Added Jabba's dias
[li]Added autologout after idle for 30 minutes
[li]Daytime is now much longer than nighttime. Sun rises at 6am and sets around 9:30pm
