Scarlet Blade fails to deliver anything fresh; except an onslaught of cleavage, and borderline nudity.

I got the email for the open beta this morning, and figured; "Hey, this looks interesting, I'll give it a shot." So I get home from work, install it, and get started. My first thought on the loading screen; "Woah, tits."

I read no reviews previous to installing and playing; and now think I should have, and not wasted my time. Sure, the graphics aren't bad, and the setting is pretty unique. You've got your pretty basic classes; tanks, rangers, AoE, stealth, medic... Only one gender to chose from (they apparently wanted to focus that much on sex appeal that they forgot to make male playable characters). Limited character customization, unnecessarily short skill tree. One interesting diversion from the norm is that many quests come to you "by wire", showing up as an icon at the bottom of your screen rather than actually having to run from NPC to NPC to get shit done. Still, the very few unique features to the game do not outweigh the generic gameplay and plot advancement, standard up-front tutorial regiment, and so on, and so forth.

Needless to say, I do not suggest wasting your time on this.

Point by point review:

1) Character Customization; 2/10 - You can give your character colorful lipstick. How nice. Hairstyles are few and pretty bland for the most part. 8 facial structures to chose from, including makeup variants. No height/sizing variables. Class system, while not the worst, is also anything but revolutionary.

2) Graphics: 6.5/10 - I will give SB this, their graphics are pretty smooth, designs catch the eye, though for some reason, colors seem a little dulled. Some aspects could have used some more attention, and the use of 2D anime style inserts does not add to the game.

3) Sound: 7.5/10 - Ah the sound. The actuall in game sounds are pretty much crap. The soundtrack is pretty generic. But right up front, you'll notice something; the character introduction voices. Mmm. I mean... Did they just hire porn stars to do the voice overs for this?

4) Setting: 7/10 - This is actually one of the best things about the game, and that's still not saying much. Yes, it's a pretty unique world with some fantasy/sci-fi touches that the writers seem to have taken a little too much pride in, as there is a side quest to go see a talking plant that's a bit too much like a parrot.

5) Plot: 4/10 - At first, it seems like they're setting up a fairly interesting plot to match the interesting world. But all your attention is drawn quickly from what little form the plot began to take by everything else. Right up front, you're wrapped up in fighting training drones and killing beetles. At least they're not slimes.

Final Score

 Unique Setting
 Sexy voice overs
 Fairly inclusive class system
 Substandard plot
Too much focus on sex appeal
 Minimal Character Customization
