Release 23 - Empowering the Shadows

Shroud of the Avatar gets new content just in time for All Hallows Eve, so you can expect the 23rd release to contain all sorts of tricks and treats. Plus, this month has seen some needed focus on some of the… shadier… elements of role play. Red Thomas traveled to Austin and spoke with the team to learn more.

Descent: Underground Steams Ahead

Descent: Underground is out on Steam and Red Thomas heads to Austin for the event to spend an afternoon talking with the team. Major milestones are waiting right around the corner for backers of the project.

BattleTech: Reactors Online

Harebrained Schemes is beating fans into a frenzy with another nostalgia-stick, and Red Thomas recently had a chance to talk with the team about their newest Kickstarter project for BATTLETECH. Today he’s taking a look at whether or not this is a project you might want to support.

Death of a Salesman

The drama surrounding Star Citizen continues and spins even more wildly as cease and desist letters fly. Red Thomas breaks a long hiatus from writing about the game to chime in.

Release 22: Marking Time

Release 22 is all about keeping time in Shroud of the Avatar as a new music system is added to the game and plans for next quarter’s development is coming together. Red Thomas takes a look at what to expect in the next release after his monthly trip to Austin where he visited with the team.

Oculus Rex?

Red Thomas sits down with an Oculus Rift to experience first-hand its impact on several games, and in the process, ponders the probable impact on the industry’s trajectory. Alliteration aside, we must caution you that Red’s excitement could be contagious.

Release 21 - Victa Ultima!

Ultima fans, rejoice! If you’ve been only lukewarm on the skills system in Shroud of the Avatar, and you really wished they’d go back to something more use-based, this is your update. You’ll find a skill system overhaul in this month’s release. Plus, I’m going to brag a little on their community again.

Descent: Underground Moves Fast

Descent: Underground is rapidly approaching Early Access at a pace that bodes well for the game. Barely three months into development and Red Thomas had a chance to play their working prototype in Austin. They have a ways to go, but find out why they might be on the right track.

Player Towns, Pet Taming, and Story Time

Custom placements in Player-Owned Towns and over a hundred new towns in the game gives Release 20 more new places to explore than any release to date for Shroud of the Avatar. Though, that’s hardly all they’ve done over the last month of work on this game that’s rapidly approaching its more persistent state.

Release 19: Player-Centric Development

Red Thomas chats with Shroud of the Avatar Technical Director, Chris Spears, about this month’s release and about how Portalarium works with the community to make their game better.

The Crowfall School of Business

ArtCraft Entertainment is taking Crowfall down a slightly different path than that walked by most crowdfunded games. I smell what Gordon Walton’s got cooking, and it’s the scent of success. How will it impact backers, though?

Release 18 - Return to Immersion

Shroud of the Avatar takes a hard turn towards immersion in their 18th release, and Red Thomas heads to Austin in order to get details from the team. Take a look at what got him so excited.

Is It “Crowd” Enough?

Setting his inner fan-boy aside for a time, Red Thomas takes a critical look at whether Crowfall is taking full advantage of the crowd-factor, and whether other design choices might spell trouble for the developing game.

It’s Getting Combative

Red Thomas sat down with Gordon Walton and Todd Coleman to talk about what early access players will be seeing first from Crowfall, and to explore the nature of the audience building around the game.

Release 17: Handcrafted Wipe

Character wipes are coming in Shroud of the Avatar’s 17th release, but before you panic, read why Red Thomas thinks that it could be a good thing. He visited Austin’s Portalarium studio and caught up with the team on all that Release 17 will bring.
