More Going On Here Than Meets the Eye

You have probably already heard about and formulated an opinion on Destiny already though – Activision is pouring half a billion dollars into its marketing budget after all – and you wouldn’t be alone. Based on the footage and information available to me, it seemed like Destiny would be little more than a glorified Borderlands with a slap of Halo paint. While my initial assessment isn’t erroneously far from the truth, there is a lot more going on here than meets the eye.

The Top 5 Hardcore MMORPGs

Last week I covered the best casual MMORPGs, so it was only fitting that we shift our gaze this week towards the most hardcore games the genre has to offer. I define hardcore to mean games that are inherently designed to be difficult, unforgiving, and intense by design. By this definition, they just don’t make MMOs like they used to.

The Top 5 Casual MMORPGs

With so many options out there for an MMO to play, there is something for everybody. Whether you’re looking for an epic fantasy adventure, alternate history, sci-fi conquests, or maybe even a real-life simulator, you can surely find and MMO to satiate your unique hunger. Not everyone is a seasoned MMO veteran however. This is our list of the top 5 best casual MMOs on the market right now and each of these would be great choices for anyone looking for a more casual MMO gaming experience.

5 Reasons You Should Play WildStar

The most anticipated new MMORPG of 2014 is, without a doubt, Carbine Studios’ WildStar. The Elder Scrolls Online has had its time in the spotlight, bugs and all included, so now it’s time for that focus to shift to the new IP on the block. However, before the complete launch that will undoubtedly be full of server stability problems, balance issues, and complaints from the typical “I hate this game, yet I play it” players, let us bask in the glow of pre-launch hype just a bit longer.

7.5
Stylish Action Platforming

Sometimes though, just sometimes, a game is funded on Kickstarter, releases to critical acclaim, and meets or exceeds all expectations – Valdis Story: Abyssal City seems to fall into that third category. While it is far from a perfect game, this charming indie delight delivers a consistent level of action, adventure, and RPG depth to keep you playing throughout the 10+ Metroidvania romp, with plenty left over content for subsequent attempts.

8.2
Becoming the Cool Kid

There have been a solid handful of terrible South Park games over the years. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever imagined that we would see a game that not only does the IP justice, but a game that is genuinely fun from a mechanical point of view. This hilariously twisted quest begins with your character as the new kid in town – your mission is simple: make friends and become cool.

Charming Beginnings

Out of all the game genres out there, MMOs are probably the least represented in terms of independent game development. Truly, it makes sense. MMOs typically require massive amounts of resources, 24/7 attention, and a deeply dedicated core team of developers. However, sometimes a handful of people are able to find workarounds for issues and create something that they can be proud of for a small, yet active, community – such is the case with EverEmber Online.

Memoirs of a Sandbox Survivor

One of the biggest growing trends in PC gaming right now is the concept of early access to unfinished games for a reduced price. While MMO players are often familiar with things like alpha and beta testing, it's new territory for lots of gamers. Rust, a game from the creators of Garry's Mod, is one of the latest entries in the ever-expanding realm of early access games and we took the time to dive in and see if this brutal quest for survival is worth your time and money yet.

Spellforce 2: Demons of the Past Review

It isn’t often you get to play a game that feels authentically like it was made 8 years ago. While it may be a bit of an exaggeration to describe Spellforce 2: Demons of the Past in such a way, it also isn’t very far off. With Demons of the Past, we are not only getting a standalone expansion in the series that doesn’t require owning previous iterations, but we are also finally seeing the end of the Spellforce 2 story.

Spellforce 2: Demons of the Past - First Impressions

In part of our efforts to cover more RPGs, online as well as offline, in 2014, our own David Jagneaux took to the newly released standalone expansion for Spellforce 2: Demons of the Past. Watch on to learn the good and bad of this RTS/RPG hybrid.

Building a Better Game World

Villagers and Heroes is a game with a twist: It is largely based on crafting and free-form game play. We took a look at Villagers & Heroes and have a great preview to offer. Read on before heading to the comments.
