PUBG Corp Drops Lawsuit Against Epic Games

By Suzie Ford on June 27, 2018 | News | 0

It appears that the legal tussle between Epic Games' Fortnite and PUBG Corp's PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is at an end. According to Bloomberg, PUBG Corp has sent a letter to Epic Games to inform them that it was dropping the lawsuit originally filed in January 2018. There is no particular reason cited regarding why the suit was dropped, but it is possible that Tencent stepped in to stop the bickering as both companies have a relationship with the gaming conglomerate.

PUBG Corp. sent a letter of withdrawal to Epic Games Inc.’s attorneys on Monday and the South Korean case has since closed, according to the website of the local court system. PUBG and its law firm confirmed the action but wouldn’t say why, nor whether a settlement had been reached. Representatives for Epic in Korea had no immediate comment.

PUBG Corp, the company behind PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, originally filed suit against Epic Games in Korea over copyright infringement with its game, Fortnite. The lawsuit sought court intervention to decide if Fortnite, or at least aspects of it, such as the UI or in-game items, were copied from PUBG. The injunction was filed in January with the Seoul Central District Court and specifically against Epic Games Korea.
