PUBG Corp has announced the formation of a new studio called Striking Distance headed by former Call of Duty and Dead Space developer Glen Schofield. Striking Distance is working on an unnamed PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds game. Schofield, while providing few details, did state that he has "the freedom to explore the PUBG universe" and that he's excited about possibilities that that brings which he "views as beyond the battle royale genre".
While Fortnite is the undisputed champ of battle royale games at the moment, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been quietly plugging away. According to Super Data Research, PUBG has sold 4.7M copies of the game in 2019 alone. As PUBG sells for $30 per copy, that amounts to $141M dollars in 2019 not including any shop purchases, battle pass revenue, etc.
The PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds site has been updated with a new letter from the producer with some big news for players: the Erangel map is getting a massive visual upgrade to give it "the same level of polish as our more recent maps". The goal is to give Erangel more realistic scenery and terrain. The upgraded map should be available on the Test Server starting today and running through June 11th. It will be available on live servers later this summer.
