Symmetra has had a hard time finding her niche in the metagame since the launch of Overwatch in 2016. Developers let the community know recently that she would be completely reworked in an upcoming build of the game. In a series of posts on the Overwatch forum, Geoff Goodman details some of the big changes coming to Symmetra.

Here's what we know:

  • She will be able to fire turrets like a projectile that will then "stick" to a location and deploy. This frees up more time to go on offense. For now, they shoot in a slow-ish moving straight line and can be seen by opponents. They cannot be shot out of the air yet, though the team is iterating on that.
  • Primary fire is not "locked" on a target and will now shoot further and wider in a straight line with increasing damage on a single target.
  • Firing at a barrier (like Reinhardt's) will generate ammo.
  • Symmetra's alt fire ability will charge-up will impact enemies and explode. "We've been heavily iterating on how much damage this ball deals, but a direct shot has been hovering in the area of 130ish, with a large % of the damage coming from a direct impact (rather than the explosion)".
  • Teleporter has been moved to E.
  • Shield Generator is removed for now.
  • Photon Barrier is now her Ultimate:

Her Photon Barrier has moved to her ultimate and is now very different as well. Instead of placing a moving barrier, she places a static barrier wall that effectively is infinite in size and has 5000 health. She places this wall much like Mei places her Ice Wall, which means you can place it at some range and you can also change the orientation.
