On September 11th, the folks over at Nevrax’s The Saga of Ryzom had two big announcements. The first was the game’s second birthday. The accomplishment is no small feat in this day and age where many MMORPGs never live to see that hallmark. The second piece of news is that The Ryzom Ring, the game’s expansion, has entered its beta testing phase. You can read an AGC preview of the expansion here.

On September 15th, OnNet USA announced that their golfing MMORPG, Shot Online is making its retail debut. The game will sell for approximately $29.99 and can be seen on shelves at retail outlets like Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

Get the news here.

ArchLord moved just one step closer to the game’s launch this week, holding a contest to name the game’s five servers. The winner of the contest was announced on September 18th. The winning server names are: Brumhart, Gaiahon, Evengarda, Cyripsus and Zian. All five names are pulled directly from the game’s official lore.

Austin Game Conference

The Austin Game Conference gave us many opportunities to speak with developers about the games they're working on. It’s exciting from our point of view to be able to get a look at what’s coming up in the world of MMORPGs either through seeing demos or, more often than not, just talking our way through a game’s development process.

Below, you will find a number of articles talking about games that are currently in development and a quote from each article to whet your appetite:

Stargate Worlds: “We’re winding down our preproduction,” [Zeb] Cook told MMORPG.com. That phase has seen them concentrate on nailing down their visual style, prototype combat and set up their production pipelines.”

Gods and Heroes: “Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising is slated for release in early 2007 and at this time, [Chris] Launius informed us that the development team is finalizing and polishing a lot of systems.”

Pirates of the Burning Sea: “We began by discussing the game’s new Avatar Combat system. These on foot battles were originally planned to be added to the game after launch, however as Maginn says, “One of the lessons of Star Wars Galaxies is that you only get to launch once, and if you launch without something that feels like it really should be a core feature… users are not actually going to forgive you.”

Fallen Earth: “In Fallen Earth, players take on the persona of mutated humans in a post-apocalyptic world. Sort of X-Men meets The Road Warrior.”

Fury: “Instead of taking notes and asking questions, Carpenter sat me down in front of his Alienware Laptop and let me loose with Fury.”

Vanguard: "I took this opportunity to talk to Butler and Jones about one of Vanguard’s unique features: the presence of an in-depth diplomacy system. According to Butler, this system is complete and is being integrated into Beta 3."

Game of the Week

Game of the week

This time out our game of the week goes to 9 Dragons.

The game itself is based on Chinese martial arts, and promises to immerse players in a "fantasy world of ruthless clans, epic battles and fights for the survival of China." Our own overview of the game is meant to give players some of the history behind the game:

"After more than 3 years of development and with more than $10 million of development cost, 9Dragons is a breakthrough in game play and graphics quality. Developed by award winning Indy21 team, this game is destined to set a new standard for MMORPGs."

Check out our newest AGC article on this game, here!

Greetings All!

I can’t believe that amount of coverage we’ve had for the Austin Games Conference. Yes, I know I was there, but I guess I didn’t see the full scope of what everyone was doing. I’ve spent the past week trying to keep up with all of the articles. The coverage isn’t done yet, either. We managed to gather so much content from the brief time that we spent in Austin, that we couldn’t corral it into one week.

This week, you can look forward to hearing from Star Trek Online, Cryptic Studios, NCSoft, EVE Online, Webzen and more!

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I have.
