Defiance: Review-in-Progress #1
As the new kid on the block, Trion's Defiance brings a lot of promise to the table for the MMOFPS genre. Over the next few weeks, we'll be looking at some of the game features as we prepare for the official review.

Let's start with the part that's probably most important: Defiance is fun. I may worry it's not quite enough MMO for most MMO veterans, and not enough of a shooter for your hardcore fans of that genre, but aside from its identity crisis Defiance remains a fun game with a lot of kinks to iron out. It's a diamond in the rough, if there ever was one. I like me a good shooter, as bad as I might be on the competitive side. As single-player experiences, they're often finite in their enjoyment. As an MMO player, I've always wanted a persistent online world in which to get my itchy trigger-finger scratched. And since I'm pretty much terrible at Planetside and its sequel, there's always been a longing for a game whose primary focus is PvE and Co-Op... Defiance fits this bill nicely.

Shroud of the Avatar: Pulling Back the Curtain with Garriott
Richard Garriott's Shroud of the Avatar has been successfully crowd-funded and the team has been busy keeping backers up to date on what's in the works. We managed to catch up with Richard during GDC and have a great first-hand report about what's going on with Shroud of the Avatar.

He started out by saying that Shroud is not just an MMO and not just a solo game; it falls somewhere in the middle. That is a trend we are seeing with a lot of games coming out over the next few years. Richard explained that Shroud leverages your friends list and the power of social media so that you can connect in with your friends as well as their friends to build on a large group of people. This allows for groups to form up in both PVE and PvP scenarios without complete strangers getting involved in your game. The only thing this system does not support too well is large scale raids. However, we talked a lot about Ultima Online and the sandbox effect it had, which is something many MMOs are returning to.

Game of the Week
Defiance is a buy-to-play, multi-platform scifi MMO currently in development by Trion Worlds and, in a groundbreaking merger, the Syfy network, in a bid to bring the intense nature of the third-person shooter together with the "persistence, scale and customization" of an MMO.

Defiance is now available on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
