Development continues on upcoming cross-platform VRMMO Zenith: the Last City, and developer Ramen VR has raised $10m in Series A funding after the closed alpha. This will help to boost and expand the development team as they continue work on this new kind of MMO.

Zenith looks to make its mark with an open world to explore and lots of emphasis on social aspects, collaboration, and connection. Doing so with an intentional focus on virtual platforms is coming at a good time with ongoing discussions happening about the metaverse and the potential impact and next chapters of what integrated virtual experiences might mean in the years to come. Andy Tsen and Lauren Frazier, Ramen VR co-founders, want to emphasize the positives of MMO spaces and interaction, and create the tools for memorable and meaningful experiences.

In a release announcing the new round of funding through partners like Makers Fund, Anthos, and Dune, Ramen VR also gave some insight into just how the alpha tests have gone so far. The Zenith alphas were "bringing in thousands of users spending an average of two hours per day with some players spending as much as 40 hours a week, traversing its massive open world and forming bonds with other players," it read. The team's focus is on making something that people can create their own journeys in, make connections with others, and enjoy the ride of open world exploration in a VR MMO.

While development continues, Ramen is looking to bring more developers on board to bring its vision to life. The full release is aiming for a cross-platform experience, with plans to launch on Oculus Quest, PlayStation VR, and SteamVR, along with other standalone VR platforms.
