Flying in MMOs can be a divissive topic, but for better or worse, depending on your angle, its here to stay. Blizzard took to its website to detail just how it will work when Chains of Domination, the 9.1 patch for World of Warcraft Shadowlands, hits later this year.
With previous expansions in World of Warcraft, flying in a particular region requires the Pathfinder achievement to get your wings. Not so in Chains of Domination, as Blizzard states that players will earn flying pretty early into their Covenant campaigns.
"Earn your wings and a special covenant-themed mount in the next major content update, Chains of Domination! Instead of challenging you with a Pathfinder achievement like in previous expansions, you’ll instead earn flying in Shadowlands early on within the newest chapters of your covenant campaign."
Players will need to complete a specific quest in the "The Last Sigil" storyline, which will in turn reward them with what Blizzard calls "Memories of Sunless Skies." This is a consumeable which will give the flying trait to all of your account's characters to take to the sky in Shadowlands.
It does take a bit of prepwork to get to the point to attempt the Covenant quest required, though, as players will need to be at least Renown Level 40 before Chains of Domination goes live to hit the ground running. You'll also need to complete your current Covenant campaign to start your journey to get your wings in the world of Shadowlands. For those who earn their wings, your mounts will be different based on your Covenant.
"Your heroic deeds on the behalf of your covenant will also reward you with a mount fit for the most decorated covenant champions upon reaching Renown 45. Kyrian players will glide on the backs of the elysian aquilon, night fae will ride upon majestic wolf serpents, necrolords will charge into battle on corpseflies, and venthyr will take to the skies on newly awakened stoneborn."
