According to the Q1 Earnings Report for Activision Blizzard, World of Warcraft has seen an increase in active players.
They cite the digital nature of their work as a “fundamental strength,”
“The increasingly digital, recurring and cash-generative nature of our operations remains one of our fundamental strengths. With a strong balance sheet, low capital intensity and a track record of disciplined capital allocation, we have substantial flexibility as we navigate through an uncertain environment.”
Regarding World of Warcraft, it saw increased active players in Q1 which Activision Blizzard point to as both new and returning players. In fact, both Hearthstone and Overwatch saw improved engagement as well. Interestingly, absent from this report is Warcraft 3 Reforged.
Overall, Blizzard experienced 32 million MAUs, or Monthly Active Users, during Q1 2020. In fact, the report recognizes the current pandemic and shelter-in-place measures as a driver for these numbers.
The report also touches the current reality of working from home and how its affecting development,
“Regarding product development, the majority of our employees are currently working from home, which while adding complexity to some areas of the game development process, has not currently changed our plans for our key content releases this year.”
