Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem is ending development and the multiplayer servers will shut down. It's not the end though.
The team announced the news in a devblog called “The Future of the Game”, noting that they want to move on to their next project. That's not all that is behind the decision, as they made it clear that some of the tech the game has been built on wouldn’t support continued improvements, particularly in the way they would hope to fix certain outstanding issues and improve the experience.
“It’s been a while since our last update, and we apologize for the silence. However, we had to make serious decisions that required careful reflection and time. Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication. We are fully aware of the challenges that have emerged from the early technical decisions made regarding the game's architecture, challenges that are insurmountable without a complete technology overhaul.”
On September 3rd, multiplayer will go away and all development will end. The team will move on to their next project, where they plan to use things that they learned from this experience, and the game's community, to make something new.
In the announcement, the team explained the issues and thanked the community for their support over the years. building upon an outdated system is one of the reasons why we've been seeing many of our older MMOs on the market modernize their tech and change minimum required specs.
It isn’t the end for Wolcen, though. Not completely. If you own the game, you’ll still get to enjoy it in single-player mode. The game will also remain on sale at a very reduced price. No details on that have been announced just yet, but over the next several months, we can likely expect the team to start wrapping things up, adding final features, and giving it a send-off.
