Witchfire, which has been in development since 2017, has been announced as an Epic Games Store exclusive for Early Access later this year.
Developer The Astronauts’ fantasy roguelike shooter got a new trailer at the summer game Fest, revealing gameplay across the game's dark fantasy setting. In Witchfire, there is a deadly war between witches and the Church. It's designed as an alternate reality dark fantasy where witches are real, but so are the witch hunters. Players will be armed by Vatican sorcerers with guns, and special magic to work on behalf of their benefactors to take on these dangerous witches.
This is the second title for The Astronauts, following The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, but the dev team has history going back to making games with People Can Fly, makers of the Painkiller and Bulletstorm franchises. So they’re definitely coming with some experience making exciting, quality shooters.
With games like V Rising, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodhunt, and Witchfire, the dark fantasy genre is having a moment right now. Like those titles, there are also some RPG elements involved. Witchfire doesn’t have a release date yet, but the announcement today and new trailer do show development progress and Early Access will be later in the year.
Featuring a development team of nine people, the game has taken over five years of development so far, but they are taking their time to polish the experience before Early Access begins.
