Optimization all around

Airship Syndicate is previewing the next Wayfinder patch, set to release in early February. The update is focused on performance improvements and stability, along what the team had laid out in their roadmap.

While the team is planning to add more content later, they're looking to create a better, more solid foundation for wayfinder, so this is a more technical patch. They want to leave the client more stable and to improve performance and the experience with a number of adjustments to the system.

They’re moving shader precompilation to start immediately, without any delay that could lead to stuttering or lag when you encounter things or enter places. Previously, this only kicked in when you encountered the content itself, and your system had to play catch up. They’re also overhauling how they process lighting, making it simpler and less of a resource drain. Additionally, they’re increasing buffer time for asset streaming regions.  when you enter areas with a lot of details, large spaces, and perhaps a lot of players, this change should reduce performance drain and reduce hitching. These changes will also significantly help players whose machines are closer to the minimum specs then the ideal ones .

This is also the case with optimization passes in areas that were dense with items to load, like Skylight and the Highlands. The team performed what is known as “major HLOD (Hierarchical Level of Detail) pass” to streamline what assets needed to load.

Finally, a series of backend inventory optimizations continue that work, reducing the player data size that needs to be sent. This should also Reduce disconnects for those who've been playing a long time and have sizable inventories, in addition to others who don't have a robust machine. PlayStation 5 players also get their own improvement choice: a special setting to let players choose between better graphical fidelity or improved performance and framerate, to achieve that near 60fps.
