Airship Syndicate is formally taking over publishing rights for their game, Wayfinder, from its original publisher, Digital Extremes.
Last year, Digital Extremes laid off employees and decided to close its publishing arm, choosing to focus on its own IP, Warframe and Soulframe. Airship Syndicate believed in Wayfinder and decided to self-publish. Seems that a deal was yet to be hammered out until now.
The teams have come to an agreement on their terms and the transition process has officially begun. As a result of the process, Wayfinder has suspended sales of the game until further notice. Service for everyone who has already purchased the game will continue as usual.
In the announcement on Discord, the team acknowledged Wayfinder’s rough launch, and the transition will come with changes.
“When we founded Airship it was to create great games in compelling worlds, with memorable characters and adventures. With those core principles in mind, we've spent the last several months working behind the scenes, challenging some of the core ideas in Wayfinder and creating an experience that remains consistent with our standards and beliefs. We did this while keeping in mind that we want to respect our founders and excite new players - all while staying feasible as a business model for us as a new independent publisher.”
Details are yet to be revealed, but we shouldn't expect to hear anything until about 4-6 weeks from now. As a company whose executives cut their own pay to minimize layoffs (they still had 12) and continue to improve their game, airship Syndicate reiterates their belief in Wayfinder and its potential.
“There will be major changes, and major improvements, but we have no plans for it to disappear like so many online-only games we’ve all played and loved,” they added.
“We think Wayfinder can be something special, and be around to play forever.”
