Grimdark co-op shooter Warhammer 40k: Darktide is still rolling out fresh updates and additions to the game, including a new wave-based game mode coming to the next update. The Nightmares & Visions patch drops next week, and the developers at Fatshark have shared a developer blog outlining how the new game mode will work.

In short, this is a new wave-clearing game mode in Darktide that takes less of a non-stop speed, with some more hands-on objectives to break up the pacing.

Players pick a difficulty to collectively attempt, plus one of five “indulgences” that give certain types of buffs as gameplay goes on. Then they’ll face up to twelve waves, three at a time. Each third wave, there’ll be some kind of objective to accomplish, with supply and ammunition caches as well as a choice of an extra buff. After the third objective, or the ninth wave, three more waves give players the chance to go crazy with their super-strong buffs.

After completing each Mortis Trials game, Darktide players can talk to Sefoni to learn more about the Mourningstar’s story, giving different insights each time. With different indulgences available, too, players can retry the mode to not only receive those buffs, but also hear new lore tidbits from Sefoni. (It’s also worth noting that the lore of the Mortis Trials is that it’s a giant vision by Sefoni the Psyker herself.)

Accompanying this Darktide release will be a limited-time special event to encourage players to join in on the hallucinations, plus some changes to Havoc mode, a revamp for the Orgyn class, and more, according to the reveal blog. The update comes out next week, on March 25, across all platforms.
