Digital Extremes made some big Warframe announcements at the Tokyo Game Show via a special event devstream. The next big update, Koumei & the Five Fates, will be released on October 2nd, adding the 58th Warframe, Koumei the dice-maiden, a new mission type, Shrine Defense, along with improvements, a Caliban rework (and as a free gift), and improvements to the player experience and companion system.
Koumei’s ability kit is going to rely on a heavy dose of luck, as it’s RNG-based. Her abilities work by rolling her six-sided dice, and requires a player who can adapt. Some examples involve threading Kumihimo traps that damage and inflict status ailments on enemies, based on your dice rolls. Omikuji will let you learn what actions you need to earn a particular special buff. Omamori is a protective ability that offers support to the lucky by way of orbs surrounding Koumei that randomly convert damage into health or shields.
Finally, her ultimate, Bunraku, lets you grab enemies like puppets and inflict status effects as you puppeteer them.
Shrine Defense is the new mission type. An earthly settlement is under siege, and you’re going to help fight off the Infested invaders. You will buy time as you fight off the invaders from the sea and gather shrine offerings until the new mini boss, Oni Carnis, arrives. Via Shrine Defense, you’ll be able to earn Koumei’s crafting parts and her signature weapons, Higasa, a gunbrella and Amanata, a polearm inspired by a Naginata.
Koumei & the Five Fates will improve the player experience and companion systems and will rework Caliban. The rework will change his abilities to make it more versatile and flexible. when you log in between October 2nd and the 16th, you'll also get Caliban for free.
Warframe: 1999 is also getting a new demo that will debut on October 16th on all supported platforms. In the demo, Arthur explores the Höllvanian city on the previously-revealed Atomicycle. Explore and get ready to battle in an Exterminate mission against a new faction, the Scaldra. Succeed and get the new Protokol Longsword skin. The demo will be replayable for anyone that wants to immerse themselves back in 1999 until Warframe: 1999’s launch in the winter.
Digital Extremes is promising a slate of improvements beyond these as well, with a graphics update happening alongside the PlayStation 5 Pro release.
