During today’s Devstream 175, Warframe developer Digital Extremes pulled the veil back on its upcoming update, Whispers in the Walls. The update will be coming sometime in December, as well as the gradual rollout of the much anticipated cross-save feature the team has been working on for a while now.
Whispers in the Walls
The next cinematic update, Whispers in the Walls, was first shown off in detail during TennoCon 2023. Set around the labs of Warframe’s Albrecht Entrati, players will uncover some of the secrets surrounding this mysterious figure at the heart of Warframe’s universe.
The update will see players traverse two new tilesets and explore environments heightened by the new tech goodies that the Digital Extremes team is injecting into the ten-year-old sci-fi MMO, including new lighting and volumetric fog systems. Whispers in the Walls will also feature a new hub area, The Sanctum, with the team dropping hints about new mysteries to find, including a new Syndicate.
Coming with the Whispers in the Walls update is a new secondary-weapon type that every player will have access to while doing the new content, the Void-powered, Eldritch blast-slinging Grimoire. This new weapon type will come in handy while taking out the new enemy type, the Murmur, as shown during the TennoLive gameplay during TennoCon 2023.
The team also made mention of some changes coming to Story Skip, as well as revamping the Initiate pack to give new players a faster track to the Whispers in the Walls update. The team is removing the mastery rank needed to do the story quests that lead into the upcoming cinematic quest, which will take effect after Whispers in the Walls updates. The new Initiate Power Pack will give players a Rhino, Nova, some ranked frames and content to get to the new content quickly. This will effectively replace the current Initiate pack that is for sale now, and will work alongside the new streamlined way to experience the story content for those players who need the catch up.
Whispers in the Walls also brings new game modes: Alchemy, which is an Endless game mode; Netracells, which community director Meghan Everett described as a "get your loot and get out" style of game mode. Finally, a new Assassination mode (with a twist) for players to take part in by doing what she describes as "juice the Murmur eye and find The Fragmented One."
Whispers in the Walls is coming sometime in 2023, and the team revealed that everything players saw at TennoLive will be playable when the update hits. A teaser trailer was released during today’s Livestream, though the full trailer won’t be revealed until next month’s The Game Awards on December 7th. Warframe will also have official Twitch Drops during The Game Awards, giving viewers a Sevogath Warframe for watching on a linked account.
55th Warframe: Qorvex; Gauss Prime
During today’s stream, the team also unveiled the next Warframe: Qorvex. The brutalist, concrete look of the Qorvex plays right into the gameplay of the ‘Frame itself, as it combines stone and radiation from its radioactive core (hence “Qorvex”) to take out enemies. The Warframe excels in crowd control, as showcased by a skill that sees the Qorvex construct an (additional) pylon that pulses radioactive damage and slows enemies within its range. A skill also sees the Qorvex conjure two stone walls and slam them together, catching anyone inbetween with radioactive damage.
Additionally, a chest beam fires out of the Qorvex that, if it hits an enemy affected by radiation damage will see that attack cause a chain reaction, damaging everything in the area also affected by the radiation.
The next Prime Warframe was revealed as well, with Gauss Prime getting the treatment. The new Prime Warframe is due out in January, with Gauss getting a new stylish golden trim.
Warframe Mobile
For those taking part on the closed beta of Warframe Mobile, the closed beta app will be sunset by the end of the year, with the team pushing headlong to get the game out in 2024. Part of the push now is getting cross platform save to work with the mobile version, though it will not be coming at the same time.
Cross Platform Save Coming December
Speaking of, cross platform save is slated to hit Warframe in December. The long-awaited feature will roll out to select players starting with the Whispers in the Walls update and will then roll out to more players at scale as the month progresses. By the end of the month, Digital Extremes states that they expect every Warframe player to have access to cross platform save. The roll out is to allow the DE team to conduct stress testing and more to ensure the feature gets to players as smoothly as possible, which the team also stresses it will be operating with “complete transparency” as this is brought to players next month.
Soulframe Test Incoming
At the end of the stream, Digital Extremes CEO Steve Sinclair teased some Soulframe footage, announcing that an upcoming test, Soulframe Preludes, is coming in December. Signups will be on the website, and the team stresses that the "pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha" will include only a couple hundred of players to test combat, combat camera, and more.
