If it has been a while since you've last heard about OrbusVR, the news of its closure may seem out of nowhere, but after eight years of building their vision for a virtual reality MMORPG, Orbus Online LLC is set to close their premiere title. OrbusVR is set to shut down in April 6th 2025..
In an announcement from Producer Robert Dutton, he expressed his gratitude to the community for supporting the game since its inception which inevitably pushed it to a successful Kickstarter campaign. Over the course of the past 8 years, efforts to keep the servers online and make the game proftiable have failed. He lamented the failure despite the team taking no salaries for over a year.
Sales of OrbusVR will end on February 10, 2025, though considering the impending shutdown it wouldn't be a particularly good idea to buy into it now. In addition, most of the OrbusVR socials have yet to report the shutdown, some of which having been abandoned nearly 2 years ago, and no mention of delisting the game is apparent on the Steam page as of this article.
There is little question that the team itself feels as though no widespread social announcement is necessary. Though the game has a mostly positive review score on Steam, this VR MMORPG never quire found its footing in a subgenre that hasn't quite caught on to the degree the industry has hoped. With an all time peak of only 337 players on Steam, and an average daily playerbase of 4 players, the unfortunately reality is that OrbusVR didn't quite make it to a massive playerbase.
However, that doesn't mean that it didn't leave an impact on those that played. Leading up to the shutdown, players in the community that are astill active can participate in a series of farewell events, including increased legendary drop rates, full access to the game’s DLC, and the final OrbusVR Mage Tournament. The team also plans to release a wrap-up of the game’s legacy, sharing statistics and memorable moments from the community. It's a fantastic way to remember a game that had a vision to revolutionize how we play MMORPGs.
In a follow-up message, a Robert reflected on the emotional weight of this decision, acknowledging the overwhelming kindness and support from players. Most notably he encouraged fans to channel their support into new VRMMO projects, continuing the vision OrbusVR helped establish. While OrbusVR may be no more, the legacy may still live on, with future projects looking back at OrbusVR and its 8 years worth of lessons. As for those that will miss the game, the developers invite you to celebrate the journey that OrbusVR has provided—one last time, so mark your calendar for April 6th, and hop in before it's over.
