Team 21 Studio has been working on their VR MMORPG Ilysia over the past several months, after vowing to take their time to refocus on four core improvement goals. They have just released a massive update that rewrites a number of systems.
The update was released back on Friday and completely rewrites the character controller, affecting all aspects of movement. Everything from walking, running, jumping, crouching, gliding, and more have been rewritten and they've added several new actions. Climbing is back and you can climb ladders, ropes and other designated objects.
You'll now be able to travel via zipline, as these have just been added. They've also fixed airships so they're working as intended. You can now sprint by using arm movements instead of joystick control and you can also use arm movements to swim. The team has also re-enabled hand gestures like pointing, and thumbs up and fists. Conveniently, you can also grab items on the ground from a distance by reaching.
There's also a combat overhaul which rewrites base combat for the whole game on the client side and the server side. There’s a removal of cooldowns on melee strikes, improved swing detection that establishes a minimum distance to register a hit, intentionally low to let people with limited mobility play too. The Martial tree skills’ melee combos now work, and shield blocking is also now functional.
Also in combat, bows have completely redone mechanics. There are also Caster changes with a new quick cast basic attack that doesn’t consume any mana, offering another option In a difficult situation and also give you additional potential DPS.
Mobs get updates based on everything else that has been rewritten, including making mobs more responsive during combat. The team promises this is just the beginning and a foundation for future updates to add more immersive and reaction based combat.
There are a ton of changes in here, including a completely overhauled party system, improvements to VoIP to make it more reliable, and a number of other fixes. Team 21 promises that this is just the beginning, and they have more plans After all the work they've done to get this big update out.
