VR MMO Zenith is shutting down support for its older shards for Quest 1 and PSVR 1 platforms next month, RamenVR has announced.
As the VR MMO winds down, as it entered maintenance mode back in July, the team has already had to consolidate shards to move its remaining population together. Now, those playing on older headsets, namely the Meta Quest 1 and PlayStation's PSVR 1, are seeing their shards closed, the lights being turned off on November 6th.
The team is quick to point out that support for more modern headsets, such as the Meta Quest 2 and 3, as well as the PSVR 2 headset, will continue. However, no real reason is given for dropping the other platforms, but it's not hard to guess that the cost outweighed the benefit running legacy servers for older devices.
RamenVR announced it was moving Zenith to maintenance mode back in July of 2024, citing a decision to pivot and work on other games. This came less than a year after a 2023 re-work into Zenith: Infinite Realms, a free-to-play version that had the aim of bringing more players into the experience and, hopefully, into the broader MMO. However, that didn't materialize, with the team now shifting to work on other VR projects moving forward. At this time, Zenith did state that no server closures were planned, but if that were to change they would give players notice. It seems that time has come.
