With zero warning from Riot, Valorant is now free to play on console, as the first-person shooter shadowdropped mere hours ago.
The official console launch of Valorant was a complete surprise, as it is now available for fans in the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, and Brazil as of this morning. With the reveal for a console release only coming to light in June during Summer Games Fest 2024, it's quite interesting that Riot was able to toss it into the masses’ hands so quickly. This launch also marks the first-ever title to allow crossplay between Xbox and PlayStation.
While players on both Xbox and PlayStation can lay the smackdown on each other with the use of crossplay, PC players will not be able to play with Xbox or PlayStation users. Notably, there is no PC-to-console crossplay, and we shouldn’t hold our breath on that feature as Riot has made it clear this is for the “competitive integrity” of the title. According to the Production Director of Valorant, Arnar Gylfason:
“We’ve received so much valuable feedback from players during Limited Beta, and feel confident to deliver on our gameplay promise for console players. Whether it's hitting that perfect shot, executing a flawless team play, or wiping out the enemy team, we look forward to seeing console players experience the same gameplay thrill as VALORANT PC players”
For anyone worried about not keeping their hard-earned progress from the console beta, there is no need to panic, as all progress from the beta will cross over to the full version as of today.
