Old World Labs announced a new, upcoming sandbox MMO, Abyss Online. This open-world MMO aims to create an ever-evolving narrative, guild warfare, and more when it hits early access next year.

The developers describe Abyss as an open-world, sandbox MMORPG, and aim to create a world where quests are unique to each player. As a result of this, the quests use what Old World Labs call a "generative quest system," where the narrative evolves based on your own actions in Abyss, with the aim of creating a unique immersive experience for each player.

It has all the trappings of a standard sandbox MMORPG, with a desire to create a robust player-run economy, open-world PvP between players and Guilds alike, and powerful crafting systems. Abyss will also have what Old World Labs calls a "Zerg vs Zerg" warfare system, where large armies clash to gain control over territories.

The world of Abyss sees a blend of fantasy and sci-fi, where magic and tech can "coexist."

Via a press release:

"Abyss' vibrant open world is filled with elements that bring fantasy and science fiction together. Inter-dimensional gates have mysteriously surfaced throughout the world disrupting the balance of the universe. These gates bring with them new elements from different worlds and eras of time. While adventuring; discover lush forests, towering mountains, and desolate wastelands or get transported to otherworldly realms while searching for treasure and answers as to why these gates are here."

You can check out the Steam page, where the devs are planning an early access launch next April.

UPDATE:

After some pointed out concerns over potential scams, and that Abyss developers had a scant history, were involved in NFT/crypto, and were already selling game currency and perk packages for up to $2,000+, early access passes and name reservations, suspicions grew.

There is also suspicion that Abyss might be a reworked version of a previously announced NFT and crypto-based game called Metagates. So, perhaps use some caution with this one. (H/T Massively OP)
