Unity Technologies has downsized yet again as they are laying off over 25% of their staff due to a “company reset.”

Unity is known far and wide in the gaming industry, as the engine is used for creating some of the biggest AAA titles to hit the market. To name a few games curated with this software, there is Apex Legends, Cuphead, Hollow Knight, Rust and Escape from Tarkov. This will be the biggest layoff to hit the game engine company thus far, even with over 1,100 employees being cut in 2023.

Even with all of their success in the gaming space, the company is still not profitable, which could be a reason that these layoffs are “necessary” for the company at this time. Unity shared a few details about these layoffs in a United States Securities and Exchange Commision Disclosure, where they state,

“On January 8, 2024, Unity Software Inc. (“Unity” or the “Company”) announced that it plans to reduce approximately 1,800 employee roles, or approximately 25% of its current workforce, as it restructures and refocuses on its core business, and to position itself for long-term andprofitable growth.”

In layman’s terms, the company is restructuring in an attempt to become profitable, as they brought in close to $1.3 billion in 2022 and still were not able to turn a profit.
