Ubisoft has announced that they are canceling the release of their upcoming free-to-play shooter title, Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland in order to “focus on bigger opportunities.”
According to Ubisoft’s Earning Release for 2024, the company is ending its work on The Division Heartland for a few reasons, but the main one is to redeploy its resources to bigger opportunities such as XDefiant and Rainbow Six. Ubisoft states,
“As part of Ubisoft’s efforts to streamline its operations and adapt to evolving market trends, there have been further reorganizations within the Global Publishing teams, both at the APAC region, that is now organized into three engagement hubs, and at the central level.
Additionally, in line with the increased selectivity of its investments, Ubisoft has decided to stop development on The Division® Heartland and has redeployed resources to bigger opportunities such as XDefiant and Rainbow Six.”
In a statement given to IGN, Ubisoft commented on this change by telling the outlet that it was a tough call but has been made effective immediately, and it is now their priority to work on a few of their other titles instead.
More so, the earnings release mentions the company will be focusing heavily on titles like Assasin’s Creed Shadows, which was announced earlier today with a premier trailer, as well as Star Wars Outlaws, and XDefiant which is a free-to-play shooter.
The Division Heartland was first announced back in 2021, and in April of 2023, Ubisoft released a deep dive video alongside a PC Beta that was set to go live later that year. They gave an overview of the classes, weapons, and crafting system, which were intact at the time.
This is just one of many cancellations to come from Ubisoft over the last few years, including Immortals Fenyx Rising 2 and several other unannounced titles.
