Ubisoft has announced that its free to play multiplayer shoot XDefiant will be shutting down. The announcement was made via X/Twitter and stated that servers would remain online until June 3, 2025, however new registrations will cease and the game will no longer be available for download. Season 3 content is still set for release, though Ubisoft did not provide a release date.

300 people were laid off as a result of this decision. 143 worked at Ubisoft’s San Francisco office while the remaining 134 layoffs came from Ubisoft’s Osaka and Sydney studios. The San Francisco and Osaka studios will be shuttered entirely as well. XDefiant developers who remain in employment at Ubisoft will be shifted over to other projects.

Ubisoft also announced that purchases made within the past 30 days will be refund. In addition, players who purchased the XDefiant Ultimate Founder’s Pack ($69.99) will be issued an automatic refund in full. XDefiant Founder’s Pack and Founder’s Pack Elite holders will not be eligible for a refund.

XDefiant is just the latest in a series of multiplayer shooters that released to disappointing performance this year. Other shooters suffering a similar fate include Sony’s Concord and Mountaintop Studios Spectre Divide.
