Transmog & You - What's New in Today's Pre-Patch

With today's launch of the World of Warcraft pre-patch that leads up to the August 30th release of the Legion expansion, a lot of players may be feeling a bit lost about what the "Appearance" tab is compared to actual transmogrification. We're here to help out!

The Appearance Tab

In the UI, there is a new option called "Appearances". For those who have played Star Wars: The Old Republic or Guild Wars 2, this is instantly familiar as the wardrobe system. Using Appearances, players can see all of the possible pieces of equipment that are available to them based on armor type and character class, including shirts and tabards that are now part of the interface. Note that some items have level and / or reputation requirement to be available for transmog.

What has been unlocked via questing or through crafting and drops is shown with a brighter appearance while those pieces not yet unlocked are slightly grayed out. Players can build as many appearances as desired and then save them for reference or as a wishlist tool for finding and unlocking the missing pieces. 

What's really cool is that tooltips on the not-yet-unlocked items will show other pieces with the same appearance and where the item can be found, hence the wishlist name.

For those who have unlocked tons of items, it is 'best practice' to save an outfit so that when visiting a transmog vendor, all that will be needed to rock the look is to load the saved outfit and hit "Apply".

Appearances are, however, different than transmog.

Transmogrification

As always, to change the appearance of equipped gear, players will have to visit a Transmog vendor, whether one found in a capital city or via the Grand Expedition Yak. Speaking to the vendor, a window opens up that shows each piece of gear equipped on the character. Clicking on the item, brings a list of the unlocked appearances that it can be transmogged into, including shirts and tabards.

Players can also opt to hide helms and cloaks, as before, but now can also hide shoulders as well. To do so, click, for instance, shoulders and choose the first option.

Players can load a favorite saved outfit right at the vendor where it will load. Hit "apply" and BOOM! Done!
