Showcase and Liberty

Throne and Liberty is set to launch in Korea in December, but ahead of that launch the developers at NCSoft put together a Launching Showcase showing off whats to come. The showcase was meant to outline the multitude of improvements the team has made after receiving feedback overthe past several beta tests. Here's a breakdown of everything that the team mentioned during the stream.

The showcase started with Project Director Jong-ok Ahn showing off the world of Throne and Liberty. He stated that the TL shouldn't be a set story, but an endless story created by the players.

He showed the weather effects and the way that weather can change not only the environment but it can turn the tide of battle. Terrain and solar eclipses will also play a big part in certain combat encounters. These "variables" will play out in unexpected ways.

Jongok stated that the flying whales that players see in some of the videos can be ridden so you can see the beautiful world of TL

Jongok addressed whether the changes to lootboxes etc. because of the western market. However, he stated that it was beta tester feedback that led to the changes.

The removal of autohunting and lootboxes were not directly related to the North American market, and what beta testers wanted, and that was the reason for the change.

After auto hunting was removed, they reduced the time required for character growth. Getting to max level takes a tenth of the time it did before. They kept content that only required manual play, and with one or two hours of play a day, a casual player should reach level cap within a month.

They also rearranged content so that later level content was moved closer to the beginning so that players have access to more diverse experiences early on.

There are multiple types of raids, but primarily players will experience PvE and PvPvE raids. PvPvE will mostly reside in the open world. Field Boss Raids and Archbosses fall into this category. Guild raids are an example of PvE specific raids. The main thing to take away is that reward drops from guild raids cannot be sold on the marketplace, and are player bound.

Jongok states that they focused on targeted combat because they wante to focus on build and skill strategy instead of aiming abilities. He also stated that the UI is changing so it doesn't appear so mobile-like. Originally the game was slated for a mobile release, but after Beta, the team scrapped mobile, and is now dedicated to PC.

Throne and Liberty is planning three major updates per year. There are two major updates after launch which includes a new region called Talandre, which is a mountainous region, with new traveral and gimmicks to learn. It should release 3 to 4 months after release.

The second update is called Dracoryft, and will feature a new species called the Dragonkin.

It will feature a region that is shared across multiple servers. Up to 12 servers will compete for control of that region.

There are also plans to add new events, non-combat content, and new weapons.

Throne and Liberty will be release on December 7th. Pre registration is open for Korean participants now.

Upon launch, TL will have two regions to explore. There will be 19 territories, eight cities, and 6 dungeons. There are two Archbosses and eighteen bosses in the launch version of Throne and Liberty

Jongok then went on to the QA portion of the TL showcase.

The first question was on the Monetization Model. There are 4 pillars of the monetization. First are "pass products".

  • There's a Growth Pass which gives you character growth rewards.
  • A Battle Pass where you clear special missions every 4 weeks.
  • You can receive a free pass as a base reward. But purchasing the pass gives you additional rewards.
  • Most of the pass products are cosmetic and growth materials. The growth materials will not create "insurmountable disparities" between those that buy and those that don't.
  • Daily missions and the more you play, the more points you'll get to open up TL's pass system.

The second part of monetization are skins and cosmetics.

  • Cosmetics will not increase stats.
  • Outfits can be changed in color, texture, and by specific parts of the costume.

The third tennant of monetization is the Marketplace

  • Exchanges through the marketplace will be made with a premium currency called Lucent.
  • Jongok said that they will provide ample rewards to balance supply and demand of the trade currency.

The fourth monetization pillar is Dolls (Amitois) and Morphs.

  • Originally the amitois are companions that heal and loot for you. Morphs are mounts.
  • Neither of these are obtained through lootboxes. However you will need to purchase cosmetics for these if you want to change their look.
  • Growing your collection will grand you more rewards

Jongok states that guilds are integral to TL. Guild growth and personal growth are intertwined. As a guild grows the content that they can access opens up, like Guild Raids and Boss Raids can take place in areas that only your guild will be able to access.

Guild encounters will be more difficult than dungeon bosses, meaning you'll need a strong guild to complete them. Siege warfare will also be available where players can battle with thousands of players, and even turn into golems before battle.

After defeating a guild in Siege Warfare, the next step is to summon a golem to transport taxes collected from the villages, and enemy guilds will try to steal the taxes from you. This game mode is called Tax Delivery.

There is also an Archboss that requires largescale multi-guild cooperation to defeat, with the same number of players as a siege.  However, despite working together guilds can still fight each other while battling the Archboss.

Mosst guild content is designed with PvP in mind. But there are other peaceful game modes with your guild, such as dynamic events, completing hunting quests and exploration.

Jongok went on to explain parties and how they work. Field Dungeons. There's Seamless Dungeons that won't have any loading screens when you enter. There are no conditions to enter Seamless Dungeons, meaning they are not level restricted, but they may depend on environmental factors such as requiring it to rain, or they may only open at a certain time.

Dungeon's cannot be completed alone, and are built for group play specifically. For more closely knit team play, party instanced dungeons are available. Elite parties will need to focus on completing objectives to clear instanced dungeons.

Weapons can be combined to create what the team states will be 21 unique "classes". By combining weapons you will be able to create your own builds that work to your playstyle. The system is meant to encourage weapon varieties and changing your playstyle for different encounters.

The team has put together a "safe enchant system" to help along weapon growth.

The safe enchant system cannot fail, and your weapon level will never drop, result in a weapon break, or decrease your strength in any way. This way, players are encouraged to try new weapons and build them without worrying about wasting materials. You can also transfer enchant levels to equipment of the same grade.

Jongok showed his character, which he slotted with a sword, but he dennotes that TL doesn't have classes, and that players will be able to choose whatever weapons they want.

He states that no matter what stats you raise, your weapon's attack will also increase. Based on your weapon, it will more closely resemble a playstyle archetype. He then goes to show off some of the abilities of the sword and shield. But he can swap to other weapons and heal himself with a want when he needs to.

This is what Jongok considers one of the strengths of TL. The Weapon Combinations system.  You can equip two weapons and activate their skills when you swap to them without having to equip anything.

He then showed some additional abilities and combinations with bows, wands, and variations of the game's 7 weapons. The game still can fall within the general MMORPG archetypes like tank, healer, crowd controls, and DPS.

Jongok explained that there are magic variables that can unlock new adventures outside of the main quest, but there are regular events that will be locked and on a timer. These are regional events like hunting contests, which can take over entire regions, and region bosses that drop special items. Both of these will be on a set timer so players can participate consistently during those times.

One day in game consists of two hours of daylight and thirty minutes of night. These will cycle throuhgout the day so players can experience all the different variables the game has to offer.
