THQ Nordic Acquires IP Rights from 38 Studios

THQ Nordic has acquired the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur and Project Copernicus in a recent announcement by the rising publisher. 38 Studios was the failed project which drew national attention in 2013 when the state of Rhode Island invested heavily in the project based on studio head and famed MLB pitcher Curt Schilling.

The only game launched by 38 Studios was the RPG, Reckoning: Kingdoms of Amalur in 2012 that was created by the studio Big Huge Games. The RPG had received critical acclaim among reviewers but failed to perform in the marketplace due to launching just two months after Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

Now, THQ Nordic has acquired all the assets of both projects.

THQ Nordic today announced that the acquisition of the intellectual property “Kingdoms of Amalur” has been finalized with 38 Studios LLC, based in Providence, RI, US. The deal also covered the acquisition of the “Amalur” - based on the abandoned MMORPG project “Copernicus”.

The acquisition itself is being handled by THQ Nordic AB, based in Karlstad, Sweden, and daily operations (sales and distribution, evaluation of sequels & new content etc.) will be done via THQ Nordic GmbH in Vienna, Austria.
