One of BioWare's most beloved narrative developers was Mike Laidlaw who left the company last year to pursue new opportunities. One of those is as the narrative consultant for The Waylanders, a new "time-travelling fantasy RPG" that has just landed on KickStarter. The team is hoping to raise $150,000 over the coming month that will help it develop "an engaging narrative featuring impactful character development, unique companion romance options and a deeply technical combat system".
During The Waylander campaign, players will travel between two distinct time periods - Celtic and Medieval - with "a rich history that has been largely overlooked in video game lore". As choices are made in one timeline, they can have an effect on the other.
- Real-time combat with tactical pause, character creation, and 36 classes (6 basic and 30 advanced)
- Play from a top-down isometric perspective that can be shifted to a third person perspective on the fly
- Story and combat inspired by RPG classics Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights 2
- 12 different combat formations (2 per class) sees players fuse characters to provide varied and technical combat options
