The Battlefield franchise is going back to the modern era in its next iteration according to Head of Respawn Entertainment’s Vince Zampella in comments (and accompanying concept art) made during EA’s recent Investor Day.
Speaking to IGN, Vince Zampella detailed EA’s decision to return to the modern era in the next Battlefield, saying, “I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it's that Battlefield 3... Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we'll see where it goes from there.”
This makes sense for a series that has been adrift for a few iterations now, never quite finding its footing amongst shooter fans. EA’s found some success in Battlefield 1, which still has one of the most iconic reveal trailers in gaming history, but subsequent releases in Battlefield V and the troubled but somewhat turned around Battlefield 2042 have necessitated taking a closer look at how to best turn around the series so that it can reach its potential.
EA is clearly making a bet on taking things back to where the series found its most success in Battlefield 3 and 4 and we’ll have to wait and see how that all pans out.
