The Marvels director Nia DaCosta found an interesting source of inspiration when pitching the film to Marvel: the computer animated film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Speaking to IGN, DaCosta explained:

“It's just an amazing, amazing movie, and has really great fight scenes and has a really great ending sequence with the main character being thrown into the sky by all the other characters"

Unlike 2001's Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, which received a theatrical release, Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children straight to DVD in 2005. Advent Children sits at a 50% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, but with an 84% audience score, the computer-animated film has become a bit of a cult favorite amongst Final Fantasy fans. The film follows the events of Final Fantasy VII, originally released on the PlayStation in 1997.

The Marvels, the latest entry in Disney’s long running series of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, debuts this Friday, November 10. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau aka Spectrum. Reviews are beginning to trickle in for the film and they’re a bit mixed so far.
