The Daily Quest - What Makes You Return to a Game?

The Daily Quest - What Makes You Return to a Game?

We've all come and gone from our favorite MMOs. I can't count how many times I've made a return to World of Warcraft, even if just long enough to remember why I left in the first place. But what makes us return? Nostalgia? A new update? Boredom? Perhaps a mix of all three? That's today's Daily Quest.

Personally, I always find myself returning to WoW, even when I was at my "peak" of being sick of the game. And often, it has nothing to do with new content... it's just me being bored of most games and deciding to check out Azeroth in the hopes that it can pull me in for a bit again.

Guild Wars 2 now does this a lot too, and probably more than Warcraft because it doesn't require a $15 investment each time. I love GW2's B2P model, because it allows me to come and go as easily as I please. And while I've never stopped playing ESO since launch, I play it pretty seldom, and look forward to the same luxury of returning at will next week.

I used to do this with Ultima Online, but lately I just cannot go back to that world. There is such a thing as a game being too old to go home to in my book. I have fond memories of my time in UO, but with the exception of a brief nostalgia hit, I just can't get into playing that one these days. Perhaps that's why I'm so looking forward to Shards Online, as it looks to be a brand new updated take on a world I miss dearly.

In fact there's an online playtest for backers tomorrow that I am super jazzed about.

In any case, what gets you to try out a game you left again? What magic notes must an update hit to lure you back? The Secret World's new changes have me redownloading the game today, that's for sure.
