The Daily Quest: How Do MMO Developers Cater to All?

We’ve all heard it before – maybe even uttered some of it ourselves: “PvP ruins PvE!” “5% of the game’s population are hardcore raiders and they determine how content is added!” “PvE ruins PvP!”

Each group only hears one thing from all the others: “Waaaah!”

This, of course, puts development teams in a quandary when it comes to MMOs. Every dev wants their game to last for a decade or more. But to keep players interested, to truly make a world that embodies the diversity that humanity represents in terms of what it craves in its off time, they find themselves faced with a seemingly impossible dilemma. Which group should be placed over the others? Or, and this is far more prevalent, how can every group be happy and fulfilled enough in their game time to want to stick around? This is the eternal debate in MMO communities and there seems to be no easy answer.

Today’s Daily Quest asks you, the ones who are in MMOs on a day-to-day basis: Is it possible to please all groups – PvEers, PvPers, raiders and so on? If so, how? If not, why?
