The Elder Scrolls Online team has shared the second half of their Return to Morrowind video series. This time, the entry focuses on the styles, environments, and even the creatures that make the region memorable.
The previous entry was a series of reflections on what made Morrowind so memorable. In many case, members of the team featured also said that it was one of their inspirations along the journey of their career in games. Obviously, if you’re talking about the Return to Morrowind adventure arc, then there will be folks with lots of good things to say, but they don’t come from nowhere. The Elder Scrolls has been a successful franchise for decades for a reason.
The Dark Elves’ home and the political balance throughout the region is noted here, with the very different options and roles you'll encounter. Dominic Davies, the Lead Content Manager for ESO, talks about the variety on the island, where you might be traveling and go through one place that is very different, in terms of features and even people, from the one you just came from.
The distinction of the various styles inspired the armor creation for this chapter to be sure to “look uniquely Morrowind”. Another term cited for the armor design is “alien”, and is designed to capture something unique to this part of Tamriel.
Something else that you probably remember if you’re a Morrowind veteran are the creatures. Cliff Racers, Kwama, and the cute little Vvardvarks get mentions, and they’re all memorable. Then we get to the Silt Striders. With a design based on fleas, these convenient transport creatures are nightmarishly big. As CJ Grebb, the Project Art Director says, they get to “show something unusual and alien, because Morrowind was not just regular high fantasy or usual fantasy setting, but expanded upon.
The team also gets into what it means to head to Apocrypha, with all its mysteries. If the Telvanni Peninsula is mysterious, then the ancient secrets and creepiness of Apocrypha are something additional.
All of this is leading up to Necrom, which will be out in June. Head to The Elder Scrolls Online for more.
