A new team-based, competitive PVP game that blends genres, coming to grab your attention from a new development team with tons of experience on some of the biggest games like League of Legends, Valorant, Overwatch, Destiny, Halo, and Apex Legends.

Codenamed Project Loki, the new game is the first project from Theorycraft Games, a new dev “supergroup”. The announcement is accompanied by a new introduction video showing off the first footage of the game, which the team describes as "pre pre pre pre pre alpha". Describing the game itself as “equal parts hero shooter, action game, and battle royale”. And some won't have to wait too long to try it out since there is a PC playtest tomorrow, June 29th, and June 30th. The team is taking sign-ups for those interested in playtests and will be expanding its play test schedule now that the game has been officially announced.

Project Loki is still a work in progress, which means that the core game mechanics like combat, hero kits, movement, and other basic features are there but other elements like hero concepts, environmental design, some of the art, final changes like meta progression and other competitive features are still being built. Clearly, Theorycraft believes they have something special so now they're introducing it to the world and opening up the gates a little bit.

The studio was founded in December 2020 including Joe Tung, Mike Tipul, Michael Evans, and Areeb Pirani. Tung was Executive VP on League of Legends and is the CEO of Theorycraft.

In a release, Tung says, “As players and developers, we feel like it's been a minute since there's been something truly new and fun to play with your friends. To make Project Loki, we took our collective experiences working on some of the biggest team-based PvP games like League, VALORANT, Apex, and Overwatch, and have been building with a group of hardcore playtesters out the gate. Now Project Loki has evolved into something fresh and unlike anything we've played so far, and we’re ready to take the next step.”

The fact that things are still early-ish in development but an announcement and playtests expanding is intentional.

He adds, “It might seem early but we became independent to take a big swing on behalf of players; to do that means involving them as soon as possible, showing our work, and building a community that we’ll listen to across every stage of development”.
