With Grand Theft Auto 6 on the horizon, the massive dedicated playerbase for Grand Theft Auto Online, the perpetual online multiplayer spin-off of Grand Theft Auto 5, may have questions about where all their hard-earned (and bought) businesses and swag is going. Thankfully, it may not be vanishing anytime soon.
In a chat with IGN, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick gave a heavy-handed hint about the future of GTA Online, explaining that Take-Two will follow not just the new money, but also the old communities supporting those older titles. More specifically, to clarify and affirm that claim, Zelnick points to the company’s support of both NBA 2K Online titles in China, which he claims are thriving to this day.
“We did not sunset Online 1,” he said. “They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they're alive and we have this massive audience.
“So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”
For those reading between the lines, it feels like an unofficial commitment by the Take-Two CEO for the company to commit to maintaining the already-running GTA Online. And that’s fair, because players have spent thousands of both hours and real-life dollars into the game, buying up in-game money to upgrade rides, swag, and more.
Plus, there are thriving worlds with unique modes and role-playing communities that a lot of players are surely hesitant to rebuild in a new game, with its new map and unsure future. GTA Online is a sure-fire proven thing, enough that it supposedly scrapped a single-player DLC in order to focus on the online mode.
Chances are good that we'll hear more about the future of both games soon, given Take-Two recently doubled down on GTA 6's autumn release date this year.
