Square Enix is shutting down another of its mobile Final Fantasy titles. Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius will end service next month after eight years.
Released in the West in June 2016, the mobile turn-based tactical RPG spinoff of Final Fantasy developed in partnership with Alim. The game incorporates elements from Final Fantasy games, like some of the signature magic spells, limit breaks, and summoning Espers along with mechanics inspired by Alim’s previous game, Brave Frontier.
Service will end on October 30th, 2024, and sales of bundles, and Lapis have already been stopped as of the announcement's release. Typical with shutdown notices like this, if you have any leftover currency, you can spend it through the end of service at 11:59 p.m. PDT and should not expect refunds.
Along with blending mechanics and design from Final Fantasy and Alim, Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius has had a series of collaboration events with other Square Enix properties like Kingdom Hearts, Secret of Mana, and Tomb Raider (before Square Enix sold the IP). These introduced summonable characters from those franchises. There were also collaborations with musical artists like Katy Perry and Ariana Grande.
Last year, Square Enix shut another mobile title, its battle royale game, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier.
It’s not all bad news for Final Fantasy on mobile, at least at this time, in China. A mobile title based on Final Fantasy XIV via a partnership between Square Enix and Tencent has been confirmed for Chinese release. Will a wider one follow? We'll have to wait and see.
