Synced, Tencent’s free to play shooter launched last September, will shut down this September after just crossing the one year mark.
The game will continue to be accessible by existing players until the shutdown date, which is formally September 9th. New registrations and in-game purchases were already shut down back on July 9th, and this gives Any existing players who want to jump in and play over the next couple of months and to use any currency or items they might have before things shut down for good.
The team gave no reasons for the shutdown, but on Steam, the game sits at a “Mixed” review level on Steam, but recent reviews have come in at “mostly negative”. Back when we shared our impressions of Synced back in September, Kanishka went in wondering if this new looter shooter could hold its own, and found that monetization was overly aggressive.
“The first thing you are shown when you boot up the game is a list of bundles you can get right now. After you head to the main menu, it’s still the same thing. While I understand that free-to-play games need to make money, having a gacha system with pay-to-win weapons is the last thing I want in a looter shooter game.”
However, he found that the game had potential if it could get past some of the issues with monetization and somewhat sketchy anticheat that could potentially be overly invasive.
It doesn’t seem like the game was able to really connect with its community, and, according to reports citing SteamDB, the playerbase peaked at under 400 players over the past 6 months.
