Development on Star Citizen continues, and there’s a new roadmap update from the team on Alpha 3.18, including some additions, changes, fixes, and performance improvements.

The coming release of 3.18 is going to bring with it some important technical changes. In the new update, the team points to Persistent Entity Streaming, which is an effort to let Cloud Imperium to scale up the shared universe and increase capacity. The first instance of this will be on the way, and it is expected to gradually let more and more servers and players share space over time.

One of the other considerations is also a technical one, with the team deciding that the update 3.18 branch will be extended for an extra patch cycle, which means that eventually when Alpha 3.19 releases, it will still be built on the Alpha 3.18 code base. This will be done for stability and the Star Citizen team is weighing how this might impact what they have planned for 3,19 or whether they can slot some planned 3.19 content into the branch.

Among the new content that is now tentatively in 3.19 is a rework of the Lorville cityscape to improve scale and detail. There are new missions planned, with salvage contracts. There will be opportunities to take on some salvage jobs for contract brokers in exchange for a fee, but with salvaged materials up for grabs. Other new missions include the Ghost Hollow PvP mission, which is a new type arriving in the Stanton system. Get ready for PvP encounters and a fight over control over terminals that could lead to a big payout.

There’s also a planned update to the New Player Experience. This update is intended for the really new players, focusing on the first 30 minutes of gameplay to help players understand context, and introduce them to some of the basic features and concepts.
